In November of 2014 my wife of 25 years left me. I had nothing to live for except my daughter and grandson. I laid in bed for months. My daughter said to me "Dad you need to get out of bed and start thinking positive". Well, the next morning I did exactly that. I haven't looked back since.
I wanted to help others that were in the same position that I was in when I was released from the hospital. Something happened to me, and my heart just opened up and was telling me to start a support group so that I can tell my story and encourage others. I had never mentioned my intent to start a support group to anyone, and I had several people, including Dr's, Pastors, a Rabbi, and others tell me that I had such a positive outlook and I needed to be talking to other individuals that have the same medical issues that I face. This positive feedback is why I started this group. My goal is to donate equipment to those who can not afford it, be a shoulder to lean on, be there anytime that you need to talk, and share our stories with one another. I want to share my experience, and help others realize what they are worth.
My name is Jeff Brinkley and I am 44 years old.
I became paralyzed in 2013. I had surgery to open up my spinal column. I became paralyzed and was hospitalized for 2 months. Upon being released from the hospital, I had no diagnosis, I was basically in the dark about what was going on with my body, I just knew that whatever it was, it was life changing. The only thing the doctors told me was that I will never walk again. I told the doctors that is their oppinion. I was ready to give up. My wife took me to St. Louis and over the course of a weekend, the hospital there diagnosed me as a complete T7.
Something had caused my spinal cord to be pinched off. After that I started to adjust. Started reading and learning anything and everything about Spinal Cord Injuries.
